Position Overview
The Associate Systems Support Engineer performs routine systems administration related activities. They ensure systems operate in a manner that meets business needs and that system improvements are successfully implemented. They assist with implementing remedial actions in the event of system failures/breakdowns. They maximize service uptime, maintain system backups, manage service licensing, and maintain security standards. They are required to be on standby with on-call availability with varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays to resolve systems-related incidents. They work in a team setting and are proficient in infrastructure systems and network-related tools and techniques required by the organization. They are also familiar with the relevant platforms on which the database is deployed. The Associate Systems Support Engineer is able to quickly and effectively solve issues as they arise. They can methodically identify the cause of the issue, evaluate it, and develop a solution in collaboration with the team. They can communicate effectively and display high service level standards.
Role & Responsibilities
The Associate Systems Support Engineer should have at least 6 years of experience in the administration of Linux servers within an enterprise environment. Key responsibilities and qualifications include:
- Technical Experience: Working experience in most, if not all, of the technical areas described previously is required
- Project Management: Experience in project management, design, and deployment of IT infrastructure solutions is an added advantage
- Systems Administration: Responsible for the administration and maintenance of Linux servers, RedHat Virtualization, and Ansible, providing day-to-day systems administration and operations, including 24 x 7 standby
- Installation and Configuration: Plan and perform installation, configuration, and migration of operating systems and related hardware and software
- Preventive Maintenance: Plan and perform scheduled preventive maintenance, OS patching/upgrades/hardening, typically after office hours
- Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot incidents and system problems, handling escalations to vendors as necessary
- Performance Tuning: Provide system performance tuning, optimization, and capacity planning
- Automation: Automate tasks and workflows through shell scripting, Ansible, Python, and Ruby scripts, including provisioning/deprovisioning of Virtual Machines (VMs), patching, configurations, software deployment, monitoring, and integration with other tools
- Backup Strategy: Establish, standardize, and maintain systems backup in line with the recovery strategy
- Documentation: Establish, standardize, and maintain best practice processes, procedures, system documentation, and reports to streamline and enhance the operational environment
- Technical Support: Provide technical support and advice for projects, fulfilling service requests and change requests
- Continuous Improvement: Proactively contribute to continual improvement programs
- Collaboration: Work and collaborate with other teams and vendors as applicable, providing progress reports and escalating issues to supervisors
- Cross-Functional Support: Work with various teams (VMware, NetBackup, and hardware) as needed to support the infrastructure
- Technology Awareness: Keep abreast of new technologies and their applicability to the area of work
Requirements
The Associate Systems Support Engineer should possess strong technical knowledge and experience in the administration and maintenance of Linux systems, specifically RedHat Linux, SUSE, and CentOS. Key skills include:
- Clustering: Experience with Pacemaker cluster management
- Virtualization: Familiarity with Oracle KVM (oVirt)
- Containerization: Knowledge of OpenShift
- Automation: Proficiency in Ansible automation platform, including the ability to write playbooks
- Storage Management: Understanding of Storage Admin/SAN technology from a system perspective
- Security: Knowledge of system and network security practices, including the use of RBAC (Role-Based Access Control), SSH, SFTP, and SSL
- Disaster Recovery: Experience in implementing disaster recovery solutions
- Scripting: Skills in shell scripting (Unix shell), with additional knowledge in Ansible, Python, and/or Ruby being advantageous
- Certifications: Relevant certifications in the above administration skills are a plus
- Project Management: Ability to prioritize assignments while managing multiple projects
- Compliance Knowledge: Good understanding of security, audit, and compliance requirements
- Teamwork: A good team player who is highly motivated, independent, goal-oriented, and possesses workplace initiative
- Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, both verbal and written
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
