Position Overview
The Director, Cloud & Infrastructure (Operations & Build) is responsible for the end-to-end strategy, engineering and operations of enterprise cloud and infrastructure platforms. This role integrates platform build (architecture and engineering) with service operations (reliability and ITSM) to deliver secure, scalable and resilient infrastructure aligned to organisational priorities and non-functional requirements (NFRs).
The incumbent will define the strategy for technology, implementation and operationalisation across cloud and infrastructure platforms, driving cloud modernisation through standardised platforms, reusable patterns and automation, while ensuring high service reliability via strong SLO ownership, governance and operational discipline.
The role operates in a highly regulated environment, with accountability for compliance, resilience and service continuity. The incumbent will also set the direction for AIOps adoption, cost containment strategies and value realisation across cloud and infrastructure services.
Role & Responsibilities
- Define and execute the cloud and infrastructure strategy, roadmap and operating model aligned to business demand and NFRs
- Define technology direction and lead the implementation and operationalisation of cloud and infrastructure platforms across the enterprise
- Establish service catalogues and reusable platform patterns for workload design and adoption
- Drive cloud adoption, platform standardisation and large-scale migration initiatives
- Set strategic direction for AIOps capabilities, operational automation and intelligent observability practices
- Drive cost containment and value realisation initiatives across infrastructure and cloud investments
- Lead delivery of cloud landing zones, hybrid hosting platforms and foundational infrastructure
- Implement self-service provisioning using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and policy-as-code
- Define engineering standards, reusable modules and platform guardrails
- Enable workload placement and scaling using standard patterns and demand forecasts
- Own service reliability and SLOs for cloud and infrastructure platforms
- Lead incident, problem and post-incident improvement for mission-critical services
- Drive observability, monitoring and continuous improvement practices
- Champion AIOps-driven service optimisation and operational efficiency improvements
- Oversee ITSM practices including runbooks, SLAs/OLAs and change management
- Enforce readiness gates, including authority to stop deployments lacking operational or resilience readiness
- Ensure disaster recovery, backup and business continuity readiness with audit evidence
- Embed security, compliance, privacy and data residency requirements by design
- Manage capacity and performance to meet demand and service targets
- Drive FinOps practices, including cost governance, tagging and optimization
- Develop and implement cost optimisation and consumption management strategies across cloud and infrastructure environments
- Oversee vendors and managed service providers against SLAs, security and compliance requirements
- Lead and develop high-performing teams across engineering and operations
- Build cloud, platform engineering and SRE capabilities through standards, coaching and enablement
- Foster a culture of accountability, automation and continuous improvement
Requirements
- Minimum 10+ years’ experience in cloud and/or infrastructure, spanning both engineering and operations
- Proven leadership of platform, SRE or infrastructure teams in large-scale environments
- Experience delivering enterprise cloud platforms, landing zones and transformation initiatives
- Strong background in regulated or public-sector environments with audit and compliance requirements
- Demonstrated experience driving infrastructure operationalisation, service transformation and enterprise-scale optimisation initiatives
- Deep knowledge of cloud platforms, hybrid infrastructure and enterprise hosting environments
- Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code, policy-as-code and platform engineering models
- Strong grounding in ITSM and reliability engineering (SLOs, observability)
- Familiarity with AIOps, intelligent monitoring and automation-driven operations models
- Familiarity with DR/BCP, resilience testing, FinOps and vendor management
- Strategic and execution-oriented leader with end-to-end accountability mindset
- Strong stakeholder management, including senior leadership engagement
- Proven ability to operate in mission-critical, high-availability environments
- Strong commercial and value-realisation mindset with ability to balance innovation, operational stability and cost efficiency
